Pro Bono Legal Services

If you are passionate about environmental advocacy and wish to give your time and expertise toward a cause you care about, CLF may have an opportunity for you.

Pro bono legal volunteers generously share their time and expertise to help implement CLF’s advocacy strategies across the New England region. CLF incorporates volunteer attorneys into its advocacy programs in all of its five state Advocacy Centers , and these generous individuals provide legal support for our cases and other program initiatives. A small group of volunteer attorneys makes a regular time commitment in the state offices, working alongside the staff attorneys, while others work on individual cases off-site.

Below are the three types of legal volunteer that CLF is currently seeking.

In-house legal volunteer:

CLF has limited office space to accommodate pro bono attorneys who can make a regular commitment of time to contribute to the various state office caseloads. These have historically been retired attorneys who help with legal cases, research, or house counsel matters such as contract review, non-profit corporate matters, etc.

In order to qualify for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:

  • be eligible to practice law in the state where the office is located;
  • up-to-date on any and all CLE requirements; and
  • able, at a minimum, to commit to the equivalent of two full-time days per week in the CLF office on an ongoing basis.

To be considered for a CLF in-house legal volunteer slot, please follow the instructions at the bottom of this page.

Law firm or pro bono contributions:

Active attorneys with a commitment to CLF’s mission or an interest building their skills and capacity in the environmental sector may find oppor tunity to volunteer at CLF on a case by case basis. Partners, associates, and self-employed attor neys provide pro bono suppor t to CLF in the following roles: non-profit and employment law and ad hoc cor por ate counsel matters, strategic litigation advice, drafting and reviewing court documents, research, discovery, civil procedure, preparation for trial, and court appearances. Attor neys from sponsor ing law firms may also take the lead on a case in appropriate circumstances, or wor k with CLF attorneys on various aspects of litigation.

The time commitment would vary from thor ough involvement in a CLF case from beginning to end, or to one discrete aspect of a case in a suppor t role.

In order to qualify for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:

  • be employed by a law firm with a formally recognized pro bono program;
  • have the capacity and firm approval to commit the necessary number of hours for a specific length of time; and
  • be willing to commit to a project or task through its completion

How to be considered:
