However, there is a vast difference between wind and solar power that does not cause any emissions during its operation and the burning of fossil fuels.

It is important to remember that fossil fuels rest on a massive infrastructure of subsidy that makes it look deceptively cheap. Some of those subsidies are very direct and others are implicit – like allowing the dumping of pollution, like greenhouse gases, into air and water for free. The International Monetary Fund summarized these subsidies in late January 2013, conservatively estimating them to be on the order of $1.3 trillion per year. http://www.imf.org/external/np/pp/eng/2013/012813.pdf

There is cleaner and dirtier energy but there is never clean energy. Additionally, the energy Return on Energy ZInvestment for wind and solar are low compared to fossil fuels.
