I am thrilled to see CLF continue fulfilling its role as an advocate for renewable energy without losing sight of the potential environmental effects of these energy options. Nothing is perfect, but we can't allow perfection to be the enemy of progress. This new agreement is a great step forward. Thank you, CLF!

Great News on an Important subject...the clean energy is important, and beginning this effort, finally, is great.

All the sea mammals, not just the Right Whales will benefit from not having their auditory components damages by the sounds/vibrations generated by the high speed sonar waves, any underwater explosives which may be needed, and the sounds from the drilling rigs.

They win, as do we, by carefully beginning the Offshore Wind Portion of the Clean Energy effort.

Richard: Thanks for your reply. CLF appreciates that there are many issues worthy of consideration and that need to be considered when advancing offshore wind, including fisheries concerns, but the agreement we announced today isn't on the one hand Smart from the Start and on the other hand NOP, it is with both hands a recognition that offshore wind is critically important and that right whales would benefit from additional measures to protect them against noise generated during site assessment. This agreement is a step in a process with many steps.

Thanks again,
Tricia K Jedele
VP & Director, CLF Rhode Island

I'm not quite understanding this, it seems you gain very little noise reduction ahead of time, with most of the noise and dangers to whales coming after they build these rather large wind farms. You have one hand aiding and abetting the "smart from the Start" interests, and another advocating the proper planning, studies and data gathering that accompanies MSP and the National Ocean Policy. I'm a little confused, but then I'm just a lobsterman, probably the ones who'll have to take the blame if the whales go down the tubes anyway.
