How can we ask the public to accept new renewable energy products if the State of Massachusetts alows the old abandoned Cannon Street Power Plant in New Bedford to stay standing with every toxin known to mankind except radioactive waste? The CLF needs to not just close down these plants it needs to make sure if they are closed down the plants and the toxins are taken away or the public will think the old wind turbines will end up in a big pile of scrap !

Who will clean up wrecked turbines?
Let’s picture the commercial wind turbines and Hurricane Carol, Aug. 30, 1954 . We need to prevent owners from quickly leaving the twisted wreckage behind for the taxpayers to clean up

They could stand there, unworkable, rusted and broken because they are to expensive to repair. The state will require more taxpayer incentives to repair the damage.

The Canon Street Power Plant in New Bedford is an example of a complete failure in public policy by Massachusetts government. In 1954 high tides closed the grossly contaminated site. The toxic plant sits there today abandoned because it’s too expensive to clean up.

Current Massachusetts legislation lacks a one-chance opportunity to look back on past mistakes and prevent turning the state into a steel-cage arena that looks like a movie scene.

These facts show the importance and urgency of the work CLF is doing in their efforts to close down coal-fired power plants. Breathing is basic to life and having your breathing compromised so that corporations can profit is wrong.
