CLF submitted its proposal today to the Vermont Public Service Board recommending strong action in response to the ongoing leaks and contamination at the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power facility.

CLF’s filing highlights the lackluster response of Vermont Yankee’s owners to the leaks. With new contamination revealed only two weeks ago, it is long past time for Vermont regulators to take action.

And just today we hear they have a radioactive steam leak in the HPCI system (1st line of defense–a back up cooling system, which is now inoperable) that required evacuating the reactor building of all but essential personnel. Meanwhile, they report to NRC but keep operating at 120% of design basis without backup cooling, and with primary cooling dependent on hypothetical functioning under “containment overpressure” conditions, a condition anomalous with originally designed operating parameters, in the 39th year of the reactor’s 40-year design life. What me worry? Yup.
