Portland, ME June 10, 2010 – Conservation Law Foundation issued the following statement in response to today’s vote by the U.S. Senate to reject Senator Murkowski’s [R-AK] “Disapproval Resolution”:
“The decision by Senators Snowe and Collins to vote in favor of the resolution proposed by Senator Murkowski is extremely disappointing, particularly in light of the leadership that Maine has shown in the area of reducing carbon emissions,” said Sean Mahoney, CLF vice president and director of CLF’s Maine Advocacy Center. “The resolution was a denial of the best science available, recently validated by the National Research Council at the request of Congress, a gift to the climate change deniers and a distraction from the real issues at hand – our need to increase energy security, reduce dependence on oil, and reduce the threat of climate change to our health and well-being. Senators Snowe and Collins have said they want Congress to act on climate legislation. With this vote behind us, we hope that they will redouble their efforts to play an active role in shaping and passing a comprehensive climate bill this session.”
