CONCORD, NH April 27, 2012—In conjunction with its Coal-free New England campaign, Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) has partnered with Phillips Exeter Academy’s Sustainability Program to present a free screening of “The Last Mountain” on Friday, May 4 at 7PM. Presented as part of Exeter’s Sustainability Film Series, “The Last Mountain” is a critically-acclaimed documentary exploring the impacts of mountaintop removal coal-mining on communities in Appalachia. The screening will take place in the Phelps Academy Center in The Forum (3rd Floor), Tan Lane, Exeter, NH (map).
With stunning footage of the practice of mountaintop removal mining, the film bears dramatic witness to the social, public health, and environmental damage wrought by coal and power companies, and chronicles the grassroots fight against coal in Appalachia and around the country. The New York Times called The Last Mountain a “persuasive indictment” of coal.
CLF is working toward a coal-free New England as a cornerstone of its vision of a clean energy future for the region. It is a time of historic progress: cleaner, cheaper alternatives are driving coal out of the market, and old coal plants are closing their doors. But New Hampshire remains a critical battleground for CLF’s work, with costly old coal-fired power plants, including Schiller Station in Portsmouth, being kept alive by failed state policies and ratepayer subsidies.
CLF staff attorney Christophe Courchesne will join “The Last Mountain” producer Eric Grunenbaum following the film for a discussion with the audience.
The Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) protects New England’s environment for the benefit of all people. Using the law, science and the market, CLF creates solutions that preserve natural resources, build healthy communities, and sustain a vibrant economy region-wide. Founded in 1966, CLF is a nonprofit, member-supported organization with offices in New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont.
