BOSTON, MA October 8, 2010 – Jo Anne Shatkin, PhD has been named CEO of CLF Ventures, the non-profit consulting affiliate of the Conservation Law Foundation. Shatkin has been managing director of CLF Ventures since August, 2007. The announcement was made today by John Kassel, president of CLF. Kassel also announced that current CLF Ventures CEO Bill Coleman will assume the role of SVP, Strategic Initiatives for CLF.
As managing director of CLF Ventures, Shatkin has both led and acted as an advisor upon multiple client projects, in addition to managing Ventures’ day-to-day operations. Kassel commented, “Jo Anne’s deep experience in consulting and renown in the world of risk assessment and nanotechnology will continue to serve our clients well and attract new business to CLF Ventures. Her commitment to CLF’s mission, coupled with a creative instinct for how to use business solutions to achieve it, make her an excellent fit for this role.”
Coleman has been CEO of CLF Ventures since 2004 and served additionally as interim president of CLF in 2009. In his new role, he will develop strategic, market-based opportunities for CLF focusing on the origination of capital funds that support mission-advancing activities in the New England marketplace, as well as advise on other CLF initiatives.
Shatkin’s background is in health and environmental risk analysis, and her technical, regulatory and public involvement work on Superfund, industrial facilities, and drinking water have prepared her well for the strategic initiatives CLF Ventures is well respected for conducting. She successfully straddles the science/policy interface on a breadth of complex emerging issues affecting businesses and communities. A distinguished expert in the field of nanotechnology, she is the author of Nanotechnology Health and Environmental Risks, published in 2008 (CRC Press). Shatkin received her PhD in Environmental Health Science and Policy and her MA in Risk Management and Technology Assessment from Clark University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic University. She is a research fellow of the George Perkins Marsh Institute at Clark University.
Prior to joining CLF Ventures, Coleman was president and CEO of Hancock Natural Resources Group, Inc., a global timberland and farmland investment management subsidiary of John Hancock Financial Services. From 1979-1987, he was director of aviation for Logan Airport and Hanscom Field. Coleman has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA from Harvard University.
