BOSTON, MA (FEBRUARY 20, 2009) Gov. Patrick has released a bold and environmentally sound plan to address Massachusetts’ transportation infrastructure crisis. This plan includes reforms to the transportation system and urgently needed new revenues from a gas tax increase and registry fees based on vehicle efficiency that will encourage cleaner travel while funding safe and reliable transportation choices for all residents of the state.
Melissa Hoffer, Vice President of the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), praised the Governor’s plan. “Our transportation crisis in Massachusetts demands decisive action. We are thrilled that the Governor has identified environmentally positive ways to generate the money Massachusetts needs to run our transit system effectively and keep our roads and bridges safe.”
Carrie Russell, Staff Attorney at CLF endorsed the Governor’s plan, saying “Governor Patrick has shown real leadership by moving a gas tax increase forward and by advancing a green registry fee structure. The measures spread the cost of our transportation system fairly and make a world of sense to address climate change and generate needed revenue for our transit, roads and bridges across the state.”
The Transportation Finance Commission, appointed by the legislature, identified a $15 to $19 billion funding gap to maintain Massachusetts’ transportation system for the next 20 years. The MBTA alone faces an $8 billion debt load and the regional transit authorities have been unable to provide essential service. Without action, fare increases, service cuts and transit infrastructure decay will continue and the deterioration of the state’s roads and bridges will remain unaddressed.
