Boston, MA (July 24, 2008) – The countdown toward the September launch of a historic auction of carbon dioxide emissions among New England states kicked off today. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a global warming agreement by 10 northeast and mid-Atlantic states to cut power plant emissions, released an auction notice that potential bidders must follow when the auction formerly launches on September 25, 2008

“Today’s announcement is an important signal that RGGI is real and that the historic first auction of carbon dioxide emissions will happen on September 25 as planned,” said Seth Kaplan, Vice President for Climate Advocacy at the Conservation Law Foundation, a New England environmental group that has been active in the creation of RGGI. “We are confident that there are enough states offering enough allowances in the auction to create the critical mass needed to launch a successful auction.”
