Our Work in Connecticut

CLF is fighting to protect Connecticut’s beautiful inland and coastal waters by forcing polluters to comply with the permitting requirements of the 1972 Clean Water Act. Many commercial industrial sites in Connecticut (and around the country) discharge pollutants into public waters. Very often, these facilities lack the basic permits that the Clean Water Act requires, which means that the discharges from these sites are both illegal and unregulated. As a result, public waters like the Long Island Sound are dying a “death by a thousand cuts.” Commercial industrial operations should not be allowed to increase their profits by discharging their pollutants into public waters, unless those discharges are carefully monitored and regulated pursuant to a Clean Water Act permit. CLF’s goal is to bring these facilities into compliance with the Clean Water Act, voluntarily if possible or through a federal court order if necessary. Together with our partners and supporters, CLF continues to protect Connecticut’s waters by ensuring that corporations will do their fair share to control pollution and ensure that future generations will have access to healthy, safe, clean water.
