“Plastic bags are pervasive in the environment. They litter our communities, they blow around,” she said. “They fall apart eventually and those little bits of plastic, those microplastics, are then in our soil, in our freshwater, in our oceans.”
“Representative Kennedy and the group of local heroes we are honoring tonight have devoted their time, energy, and passion to defending our homes, protecting the health of our children, and supporting the vibrancy of our communities,” said Bradley Campbell, president of CLF.
“No one should be given a free pass to pollute Rhode Island waters,” James Crowley, staff attorney at the CLF, said in a statement. “The state has the power to hold these polluters accountable and it must act now to protect our waters for future generations.”
“I think we all have more common interests than not, in wanting a metro area that works, and a broader region that works,” said Amy Laura Cahn, a senior attorney at CLF.
The vision Mayor Walsh outlined for a resilient Boston Harbor is a promising one. Does the city, including its political leadership and business community, have the will to truly make it a reality? That remains to be seen.
“Not only is this coal-burning plant damaging our climate, but it has also dramatically undermined the health of one of our most iconic natural resources, the Merrimack River,” says CLF attorney Tom Irwin in a statement. “It’s time for this damage to finally be addressed.”
“There is growing evidence of a correlation between cyanobacteria and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease,” said Tom Irwin of the Conservation law Foundation.
Irwin said the organization hopes that the lawsuit forces the state to invest in treatment technologies to end the problem.
Residents are working with the Conservation Law Foundation to sue the state over the problem. That lawsuit is due out in the coming days. “What the tragedy in the Merrimack Valley makes clear is that we need to be weaning ourselves off natural gas now,” said Bradley Campbell, president of the Conservation Law Foundation in Boston. “This is a system with too many risks and vulnerabilities.’’
