June 3, 2025 (New Haven, CT) – The Connecticut General Assembly has passed a bill that would make traveling on public buses more affordable for residents across the state. Senate Bill 1377 requires the Connecticut Department of Transportation to discount bus fares up to 50 percent for youth, seniors, and veterans. Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is calling on Governor Ned Lamont to sign the bill without delay – and ensure it receives the funding it needs to make a real impact.
“Public transit should be a ladder to opportunity, but many people struggle to afford bus fare,” said Marc Gonzalez, Connecticut program coordinator at CLF. “However, ladders don’t work if someone pulls them up halfway. The Governor needs to sign this bill and fund it fully – otherwise, we’re leaving too many people stuck at the bottom.”
The measure, part of a larger transportation package, would provide discounted fares to groups that often rely on public transit the most. It would also allow school districts to purchase reduced-cost bus passes for students.
CLF testified in support of fare-free transit during hearings earlier this year and will continue to advocate for affordable fare options to ensure a more equitable transportation system across Connecticut – one that connects everyone to opportunity, no matter their zip code or income.
CLF experts are available for further comment.
