June 13, 2023 (BOSTON, MA) – Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has announced a $50 million green bank fund to develop decarbonized affordable housing in the state. Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) released the following statement in response.

“Fossil fuels are driving the climate crisis and its impacts in our communities,” said Caitlin Peale Sloan, Vice President of CLF Massachusetts. “Couple that with the dire shortage of affordable housing for those who need it most, and this green bank is filling a huge need here in Massachusetts. Polluting emissions from buildings are a scourge on our health and the planet, and this fund will go a long way towards ending our addiction to fossil fuels.”

Governor Healey announced the creation of the fund at an event today. The Massachusetts Community Climate Bank is the country’s first green bank dedicated to affordable housing. It is designed to maximize investment in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the building sector. According to the state, the bank will focus on affordable housing, where residents bear a disproportionate burden in energy costs and climate impacts, to promote an equitable energy transition and meet environmental justice populations’ needs.
