May 13, 2005 (Boston, MA) – Governor Maura Healey released her administration’s energy affordability bill – the Energy Affordability, Independence, and Innovation Act. The legislation follows a winter where a combination of frigid temperatures and faulty natural gas infrastructure sent utility prices sky high. Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) released the following statement in response.
“Governor Healey’s new energy affordability bill introduces some no-nonsense reforms and promising ideas, particularly around removing outdated programs and creating new ways to make clean energy projects more accessible,” said Caitlin Peale Sloan, CLF Vice President for Massachusetts. “However, to truly make energy affordable, the governor must take bolder steps to rein in excessive utility spending on costly infrastructure projects and corporate profits. Holding utilities accountable is essential—not just for climate progress, but for the financial well-being of Massachusetts families.”
CLF will continue to push utility companies to meet their obligations to our communities, to commit to an equitable strategy to support residents, and to bolster energy efficiency programs that save families and businesses money.
CLF experts are available for further comment.
