January 7, 2021 (PROVIDENCE, RI) – President-elect Joe Biden is set to announce Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo as his nominee for the next Secretary of Commerce according to multiple reports. Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) released the following statement in response.

“We congratulate Governor Raimondo on her expected nomination, and urge this Ocean State governor to promptly undo the Trump Administration’s unlawful assault on ocean protections,” said Bradley Campbell, President of CLF. “Expanding offshore wind, taking emergency steps to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale, and stopping the overfishing of New England’s depleted cod must be top priorities for Governor Raimondo once she is confirmed. We’ll also be holding her successor accountable for taking immediate action on climate here at home.”

Among other responsibilities, the Secretary of Commerce oversees federal ocean policies, including setting rules for fishing, protecting marine animals, and developing resources like offshore wind.

CLF experts are available for further comment.
