February 11, 2019 (BOSTON, MA) – Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) released the following statement today as legislators announced legislation designed to hold plastic producers responsible for the safe disposal of products currently littering communities across the country.

“Fossil fuel companies have created the plastic crisis at our expense,” said Brad Campbell, President of Conservation Law Foundation. “Beyond littering our streets and waters, plastic production harms human health, destroys our climate and hobbles the budgets of cities and towns. This groundbreaking federal legislation will hold these large corporations accountable in cleaning up the damage they’ve done.”

The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act will require plastic manufacturers to take responsibility for collecting and recycling their products, institute a nationwide beverage container refund program, phase out certain polluting products, and impose a fee on plastic shopping bags.
