The biggest contributors to the climate crisis should pay their fair share of the costs. Climate Superfund laws will require the polluters who have recklessly produced fossil fuels for decades to fund measures to protect people from the consequences.

CLF In Action

CLF helped lead a successful campaign for Vermont to pass a landmark, first-of-its-kind Climate Superfund law in 2024. Today, CLF is also helping defend the law against bad faith legal challenges from special interest groups trying to allow Big Oil and large fossil fuel producers to escape accountability for their actions.

States across New England are considering passing their own legislation to make Climate Superfunds a reality across the region. CLF is advocating for these bills in the face of rampant misinformation, funded and fueled by polluters who don’t want to help clean up the mess they made.

These polluters would prefer if everyday New Englanders like us paid for the consequences of climate change via tax hikes, spiking utility bills, and endless rounds of repairs following climate change-fueled disasters.

What’s At Stake

The pollution causing our planet to overheat is triggering extreme weather across New England, and it’s only getting worse. Floods, fires, and rising sea levels threaten the health, safety, and livelihoods of New Englanders. These unnatural disasters have already cost us billions of dollars. Worse, people have lost their lives to flooding, extreme heat, and other climate change-driven events.

The money generated by Climate Superfund laws could go a long way toward protecting New Englanders from some of this damage. By funding projects to buffer against extreme weather, like managing flooding, strengthening seawalls, cooling neighborhoods, and more, Climate Superfunds could save lives during the next awful storm.

The biggest players overheating the planet should have to pay their fair share. Climate Superfunds are a major step in the right direction.
